Yoshida ware

If you want to have fun in the area

Hizen Province, which refers to Saga and Nagasaki, has a history of more than 400 years of pottery production since Hideyoshi's invasion of the continent. Yoshida-yaki" is one of them, although it is not so well known. The Yoshida Saraya district is a 7-minute drive southeast of the roadside station in the direction of Yoshida. During the Edo period, the area flourished under the patronage of the Nabeshima clan. Today, seven potteries continue the tradition. The showroom of the Hizen Yoshida Pottery Kaikan exhibits the works of each potter. You can also try your hand at hand-binning and painting. If you find a piece you like, visit the kiln and see for yourself. In the area, the factory of "Soetetsu Pottery," which is no longer in business, remains, and you can catch a glimpse of Yoshida-yaki in its heyday. Some Yoshida-yaki pottery is also on display at the roadside station.
