Hirotani Marsh

Let's take a closer look at endangered wild plants with binoculars!

The only marshland in Kitakyushu National Park in Fukuoka Prefecture. The marshland was formed when hard granitic rocks, which do not dissolve easily in water, blocked underground water like a dam. The marshland on the karst plateau is rare in the world, and is home to endangered species such as Japanese knotweed and Japanese knotweed, as well as precious wild plants such as Japanese thistle, butterfly lily, Japanese buttercup, and Japanese knotweed. Therefore, entry to the marshland and collection of wild plants are prohibited. Please use binoculars or other equipment to observe the plants from the top of the trail. The area is designated as a natural monument of Kanda Town.
