Takamai Mountain
The best place for a spectacular view of Amakusa! Sea, islands and Amakusa Five Bridges at a glance!

It is a small 117-meter-high mountain located in the eastern part of Matsushima Town, but the view from the observatory at the top of the mountain is one of the most representative viewpoints of Amakusa. The mountain used to be called Mt. Takata, but its present name comes from a legend that "a local warlord enjoyed dancing on the top of the mountain during the Warring States Period. It is the starting point of the Kyushu Nature Trail Kankai Alps Course that runs through Kamitenso City. From the summit, you can see the Ariake Sea to the west and Unzen, the Shiranui Sea to the east, and Aso in the far distance. The view of all five Amakusa bridges can be seen from the top, especially at dusk, when the sun setting and a magnificent view of Unzen and Amakusa Matsushima, both national parks, spread out before your eyes. For this reason, it has been selected as one of the "100 best sunsets in Japan. There are about 30 cherry trees on the summit, which attract many cherry blossom viewers in April. The area is designated as a national scenic beauty spot.

Amakusa Pearl Garden & Underwater Aquarium Sea Donut
Amakusa Pearl's Charm: The Sea of Amakusa and Dolphins

Amakusa's mild year-round climate and plankton-rich waters are ideal for pearl cultivation. In December 2021, the Amakusa Pearl Garden will take over the history of the Amakusa Pearl Center, a tourist facility specializing in Amakusa pearls, and be reborn as the Amakusa Pearl Garden with a full lineup of food, beverage, and merchandise stores that will attract visitors with over 4,000 items of pearl jewelry and other specialty stores, as well as domestic and international merchandise centering on Amakusa.
The "Underwater Aquarium Sea Donut," which was renovated at the same time, is the only aquarium in western Japan that floats on the sea. Under the theme of "Traveling Aquarium," the aquarium is divided into five exhibition zones that take visitors on a "journey" through the seas of Amakusa and other parts of the world. Interacting with dolphins is also an enjoyable experience. The aquarium also offers a wide variety of hands-on activities, including a night aquarium during the summer vacation period and a dolphin trainer experience.

Cruising in the Amakusa Sea, Dolphins or Dolphins? Amakusa Five Bridges Tour?

Mio Camino Amakusa, a commercial complex located in the same area as the Amakusa Pearl Garden and Underwater Aquarium Sea Donuts (with a shared parking lot), offers bolting and marine leisure activities as well as food, drink, and merchandise sales. Sea Cruise, which is jointly operated by the two companies, offers Amakusa Dolphin Watching and Amakusa Five Bridges Cruising. The dolphin-watching cruise heads for the vicinity of Tsurinoshima Island in Shimo-Amakusa, where the annual encounter rate is 90%. Friendly dolphins come close to the cruise ship and show us their dynamic dolphin jumps. The cruise takes about two hours. The Amakusa Five Bridges Cruise takes about 30 minutes between the No. 2 and No. 5 bridges. The waves are calm in the area, so there is no need to worry about seasickness. All of the company's cruise ships are equipped with air conditioning and toilets, and the interior and exterior designs are by industrial designer Eiji Mitooka, giving them a luxurious feel. Boarding is available at "Mio Camino Amakusa" and can be done at the pier in front of the adjacent "Rizo Terrace Amakusa.

Amakusa Shiro Museum
Unraveling the Mystery of Amakusa Shiro, the Young General of the Amakusa-Shimabara Rebellion

It is located almost directly across from "Roadside Station Kamitenso Sanparu" in Kamitenso City. The Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion was a revolt led by a 16-year-old Christian boy, Shiro Amakusa, who led a revolt among the local residents of Shimabara and Amakusa. The museum introduces the historical background of the revolt and the influence of Namban culture through materials and videos. The museum has also taken over the collection of the Santa Maria Museum, a private museum across from Ariake Roadside Station, and exhibits some of its collection. There is also a "Bell of Love" in the park, which is said to convey one's feelings to the other person when one strikes a bell toward the Ariake Sea while thinking of the person one loves, with the ocean breeze conveying one's feelings.

Toshima
Cat island with more cats than islanders.

Cats are booming these days. You must be watching cat videos by accident. If you are such a cat lover, let's go to Yushima, an island of cats in Amakusa. Yushima is a 2-minute drive from the roadside station Kamitenso Sanparu, or a 5-minute walk from Ebito Port, and can be reached in about 25 minutes by a ferry that makes five round trips a day. There are approximately 300 residents on this small island of 6.5 km in circumference, which lies off the coast of Kamitamakusa. Cats, which are said to outnumber the islanders, live a leisurely life on the island. As soon as you get off the ferry, you will see cats. Cats, cats, and more cats are everywhere on the island.
In fact, however, this Yushima is also called "Dango-jima" because the residents of Shimabara and Amakusa had a strategy meeting during the "Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion. In addition, the beach "Higashi no Hama Beach (Yushima Beach)," a 6-minute walk from Yushima Port, is also a spawning ground for sea turtles. Never destroy the eggs of sea turtles. The famous Yushima daikon radish and fresh seafood are also good souvenirs.

Amakusa Christian Museum
Amakusa's history of Christianity in hiding is told in four zones.

After entering Amakusa city, go here first. It stands in the "Martyrdom Park" where there is a mound of 1,000 martyred warriors and a Christian cemetery. The history of Christian faith in Amakusa is divided into four zones: "History of Christianity in Amakusa," "Introduction of Nanban Culture," "Shimabara-Amakusa Putsch," and "Restoration of Amakusa and Christian Faith after the War. About 200 items are on display, including weapons used in the Shimabara-Amakusa Revolt, the nationally designated important cultural property "Illustrated Illustrated Illustration of the Sacred Body in Autograph Color on Opulent Ground (also known as the Amakusa Shiro Battle Banner)" (usually a replica is on display), tramplings from the period of Christian suppression, and the Marian Kannon, a reminder of life as a hidden Christian. The actual "Amakusa Shiro Battle Flag" is exhibited four times a year for a limited period of about one week each, and is open throughout the year.
In the Christian cemetery in the park stands a statue of Luis de Almeida, a Portuguese missionary who built Japan's first general hospital and nursery school and ended his life in Amakusa, and a monument to Adam Arakawa, the first martyr in Amakusa.
