I want to experience something different in my travels.
Let's challenge adults to do something interesting too.
How about a geiko experience for a women's trip?
Geiko outfits are a perfect match for the retro architecture!

When one thinks of Takeo Onsen, the dragon palace-like tower gate designed by Kingo Tatsuno and the bathtubs "Tonoyu" and "Ieroyu" that have existed since the Edo period come to mind. The onsen has a history of more than 1,000 years, and developed as an inn town during the Edo period (1603-1867). In the Edo period (1603-1867), it developed as an inn town. Furthermore, since there was a coal mine nearby, the area was crowded with miners until the 1950s. As a result, there were many geisha houses, where colorful geisha strolled around the hot spring resort. Today, however, there is only one Okiya and only five or six geisha.
At Takeo Onsen, Kazuko Iwamoto, an active geisha, and others will do your makeup and dress you as a geiko. The program is popular among foreigners as well. "We once had a German man with a beard who became a geiko," laughs Ms. Iwamoto. The two who took on the challenge this time were Kyoka Senma and Yukako Murochu, both residents of Saga City.

We immediately started the white makeup at Mr. Iwamoto's only Okiya "Fuji Seat" in Takeo! The skin that comes out of the kimono, such as the collar, nape of the neck, and part of the back, is painted white. Normally, they use kneaded white powder dissolved in water and pomade oil, but here, they use doran for stage use. The dancer applies it generously to the collar and legs, then applies rouge around the eyes and mouth. The reason for painting the face pure white in this way is so that the audience can see the face clearly in the dark. This is a remnant of the days when only candles were used for lighting.
After finishing the white paint, she applies a thin layer of rouge to her eyelids, draws in her eyebrows, adds false eyelashes, and draws a clear red eyeliner. Lipstick is applied to complete the geiko's face. Once the make-up is ready, the geiko is dressed. The kimono is completed with the katsura (wig)!

Moist? Strolling the streets of Takeo Onsen dressed as a geiko

They look at each other dressed as geiko, and laugh and blush, saying, "Really? After the transformation, the course of this experience is to take a walk in the Takeo Onsen district as a geiko. They were supposed to be walking quietly, but both of them were as excited and energetic as they usually are. They are not used to wearing kimonos, so walking with their inner thighs may not be their favorite thing to do. After taking a commemorative photo in front of the gate, we visited the Takeo Onsen Shinkan, also designed by Kingo Tatsuno. Built in the early Taisho period (1912-1926), it is an important cultural property of Japan. Inside the building, we took a photo in a calm atmosphere to match the retro atmosphere.

On the first floor of the new building, there are still some bathrooms from those days, such as "Otoko Go Sento" (photo) and "Onna Go Sento" (photo), which can be viewed as reference materials. Geishas may have performed their tricks. The two of us were in the mood to be actors, and we were all wearing three fingers... "What do you do with three fingers?" (What do you do with three fingers?). Still, as you can see in the photo at the top of the page, the two geiko were smiling and saying, "Welcome to our party. As time went by, she also showed her graceful expression, and I felt like a geiko on my day off. Would you like to become a geiko in Takeo Onsen?
