Kanzeonji Temple and Kaitan-in Temple

Kaitan-in Temple along with Todai-ji and Yakushi-ji Temples Kanzeon-ji Temple with Buddhist statues from the Heian and Kamakura periods

It was built by Emperor Tenchi in memory of his mother, Emperor Saimei. It took about 80 years to complete. The temple was known as the "Three Temples of the Precepts" together with Todaiji Temple in Nara and Yakushiji Temple in Shimono (Tochigi Prefecture). At its peak, the temple had 49 sub-institutions, but they were either burned down or abandoned. The golden hall and lecture hall of Kanzeonji were also destroyed by fire and rebuilt in the 17th century. The treasure house contains many important cultural properties, including one of the largest exhibits of Buddhist sculptures in Kyushu. Kanzeonji's main hall, auditorium, and the main hall, bell tower, and bell of the Kaitan-in Temple are tangible cultural properties of the prefecture. The hydrangeas in early summer and cosmos in autumn soothe visitors. (Photo above: Kanzeonji Temple, Photo below: Kaitan-in Temple)

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

Prayers for success and plum blossoms are also a specialty of Tenmangu Shrine.

The poem was composed when Michizane Sugawara left the capital for Dazaifu and said goodbye to his beloved plum blossoms. This waka poem is said to have been composed by Sugawara no Michizane when he was transferred to Dazaifu to bid farewell to the plum blossoms he loved in the capital. According to legend, the plum blossoms flew from the capital in love with Michizane. Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine was built over the graveyard that housed Michizane's corpse, and its deity is Sugawara no Michizane. As the head shrine of approximately 12,000 shrines enshrining the god Tenjin, the shrine attracts many worshippers. Michizane is also the god of learning, and during exam season, students visit the shrine to pray for success in entrance exams. Don't forget to try the "Umegae mochi" (rice cake with ume leaves) at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.

A Zen temple belonging to the Tofukuji school of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. The temple was founded in 1273 by Tetsugyu Enshin, a student of Enji (Seiichi Kokushi). The temple is a conjunct temple of Tenmangu Shrine. In 2014, the garden was designated as a scenic beauty by Fukuoka Prefecture, but unfortunately, photography has been prohibited in recent years due to the poor manners of visitors. In some cases, the visit itself has been cancelled in Corona. We urge visitors to strictly observe good manners.

Houmangu Kamakamon Shrine

A shrine known for its "match-making" benefits. Recently popular for the "Oni no Kane" (Oni no Shura).

Since the shrine enshrines Tamayorihime no Mikoto (Princess Tamayori), it has a history of being popularly known as a "god of marriage" that attracts and brings souls (tama) and spirits together. The stylish interior of the temple was designed by world-renowned interior designer Masamichi Katayama, and the observatory in the back of the temple offers a panoramic view of the city of Dazaifu. The temple grounds are also famous for its cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, which are illuminated during the season. Visitors can enjoy the fantastic beauty of the shrine during the daytime. In recent years, the temple has been the focus of attention due to the boom of the anime "Oni no Kane" (Blade of the Demon), and in fact, it is the birthplace of "Jodo," a form of martial arts in which Zatoichi uses a walking stick as a weapon.

Musashi Temple

Is the temple known for its beautiful wisteria flowers "Buzo" instead of "Musashi"?

Located at the entrance of Mt. Tenpaisan, it is the oldest temple in Kyushu, but the exact date of its founding is unknown, although there is a tradition that it was founded in the mid-7th century by Fujiwara Toramaro, a descendant of Fujiwara Kamatari. The main deity is the Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha) carved from a camellia tree, which is believed to have been used to pray for the healing of illness. Azaleas and wisteria are beautiful in the precincts of the temple. Also known as "Wisteria Temple," the "Choja no wisteria" is said to be 1,300 years old. The wisteria is at its best from mid-April every year. The wisteria festival is held every year in mid-April and attracts many visitors. There is also a purple wisteria waterfall in the precincts of the temple where Michizane Fujiwara purified himself.

Futsukaichi Onsen

The hot spring, which was sung about in the Manyoshu, is "hot water for beautiful skin" that is moist and smooth.

Futsukaichi Onsen, an ancient hot spring in Tsukushi, was mentioned in the Manyoshu, a collection of poetry compiled as far back as 1,300 years ago. The hot spring is an alkaline simple hot spring containing high levels of radon, and has a reputation as a "hot spring for beautiful skin" because of its moist water that envelops the skin. There are six bathhouses in Chikushino City, including ryokan (Japanese-style inns), where visitors can stop by to take a bath, such as "Hakata-yu" (300 yen for adults) and "Gozen-yu" (250 yen for adults), which retain their traditional atmosphere.
