Jukkaen

A different world of azaleas in spring and autumn leaves in fall! The remains of the Tono's villa are open to the public only during the season.

The garden was created over a period of 10 years on the former Nabeshima family villa site, a vast area of approximately 60,000 m2. Its name comes from the villa "Jukatei. There are 10,000 rhododendrons and 30,000 azaleas planted, and in spring, the entire garden is filled with flowers. In summer, fresh green foliage sprouts, in autumn the leaves turn red, and in winter they are covered with snow, creating a seasonal scene. Artificial waterfalls are also located here.
Moreover, since the garden is landscaped utilizing the slope of the mountain, visitors can enjoy the three-dimensional beauty of the garden. From the pavilion on the hill, you can see the Ariake Sea and the flowers below. The garden, which looks as if it has been lavishly landscaped by a lord, allows visitors to forget about the time and take a rest.

History Museum of Sano Tsunetami and the Miezu Naval Station Site

Invisible World Heritage Site to be talked about Exploring the Naval Power of the Saga Clan at the End of the Edo Period

Miezu Naval Station Site is one of the components of the World Heritage Site "Meiji Japan Industrial Revolution Heritage". As the base of the Western-style navy of the Saga Clan at the end of the Edo period, naval education, repair of Western-style ships, and construction of Japan's first practical steamship "Ryoufumaru" were conducted here. Although the site was registered as a World Heritage site as remains that show the naval power of the Saga clan at the end of the Edo period, the remains have been buried, so visitors can see what it was like in those days through a VR scope. A full-scale model of the dry dock remains (part of the dry dock) excavated in 2011 can be seen at the History Museum.
Sano Tsunetami was a samurai of the Saga Clan at the end of the Edo period and is considered one of the Seven Sages of Saga. He was a brilliant scholar and directed the production of the model of steamships and steam cars and the telegraph machine at the Miezu Naval Station. He also founded the "benevolent society" that later became the Japanese Red Cross Society. He also founded the "Benevolent Society," which later became the Japanese Red Cross Society, and provided aid to the wounded, both friend and foe, during the Civil War.
