Shimabara's history through the reconstruction of the castle
Shimabara Castle, built in 1624, was a magnificent castle that incorporated the architectural style of the Azuchi-Momoyama period. In 1874, the castle was abandoned, but in 1964, the five-story castle tower and three three-story turrets were restored. Currently, the castle buildings are used as the Christian Museum, the Kitamura Nishimochi Memorial Museum, and a folk tools museum. In addition, a new "warrior's seal" is now available for sale. Each stamp is 300 yen, and a special set is also available.
Adults 550 yen, Elementary, Junior high, and senior high school students 280 yen (common admission fee for all three museums: Tenshukaku, Sightseeing and Reconstruction Memorial Hall, and Seimochi Memorial Hall)
A luxurious and stylish Meiji-era mansion with a spring-fed pond where Nishikigoi carp swim and play
One of the "Mizuyashiki" in Shimabara City, a town of spring water. It was built by Genzo Ito, a medical practitioner, as his villa from the late Meiji to Taisho periods. It was named "Shimei-so" because of its excellent views in all directions. The garden was created in the early Showa period by a Zen monk, and is centered around three spring-fed ponds of various sizes with Nishikigoi carp swimming in them, and planted with red pine trees and maple trees. In addition, the front and left sides of the tatami room extend out over the pond, so that the pond can be seen from the edge of the house. This enhances the atmosphere of the house and pond. Registered as a national monument and a national cultural property.
Adults 310 yen, High school students and younger 150 yen, Free for preschool children
Ganso Himematsuya Honten
If you come to Shimabara, you have to try it! The best zoni with ingredients that is delicious and full of flavor!
According to one theory, Amakusa Shiro is said to have invented "Guzoni", a local dish representative of Shimabara. It is said that during the Shimabara Rebellion, the warriors continued to fight by adding various ingredients gathered from the mountains and the sea to the rice cakes they had stored as food for the troops. In 1813, the first generation of Himematsuya invented the "Ingozoni" based on this recipe, which has been handed down to this day. The zoni is a culmination of Shimabara's food culture, which is rich in ingredients. Zoni, with its delicious broth, is a treat that is hard to find anywhere else. A variety of set menus are also available at the restaurant.
The History of Christianity in Shimabara: Tracing the Battles of Amakusa Shiro and Others
Hara Castle Ruins, one of the sites registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site, was the main battleground of the "Shimabara-Amakusa Putsch" led by the Christians in hiding in the early days of the prohibition of Christianity. Today, nothing remains at the castle ruins that tells of those days, but at the museum, which opened after the castle was registered as a World Heritage Site, visitors can learn more about the Christian hiding place, focusing on materials related to Hara Castle and the ruins of Hinoe Castle, the residence of the Lord of Arima. The Christian religious tools excavated from the ruins of Hara Castle are interesting.

Still volcanically active, Mt. Unzen Nature is harsh and beautiful
It is a volcano in the central part of the Shimabara Peninsula and consists of more than 20 mountains in total, from Heiseishinzan, the highest peak, to Fugendake, Kunimidake, Myokamidake, and other peaks from Bizan in the east to Saruha in the west. The volcanic activity continues to this day, and the pyroclastic flow caused by a major eruption in June 1991 caused extensive damage. Unzen, but nature is also beautiful: Miyama-kirishima, also called "Unzen-tsutsuji," is a narrow-leafed, small-flowered azalea that blooms from late April to May. The best time to view the azaleas is late April on Mt. Unzen, early to mid-May in the Ikenohara and Takarahara park areas, and mid to late May in the Nitatoge area. During the fall foliage season, more than 120 species of fir, komine maple, urihada maple, and dodan azalea turn red, and the area is designated as a national natural monument (Fugendake broad-leaved forest). Take the Unzen (Nitatoge) Ropeway to enjoy the spectacular view.

Unzen is famous for its Christian martyrdom site! Famous as the site of Christian martyrdom
Smoke rises incessantly from the desolate and rocky ground with the smell of sulfur. It is truly a hell! Unzen Jigoku, one of the most famous places in Unzen Onsen, has about 30 hells named after legends, such as "Oito Jigoku" and "Seishichi Jigoku. The standard sightseeing tour is to visit each of the hells along the promenade. This area is also famous as the place of Christian martyrdom. During the time of the Christian prohibition, believers who were captured in Nagasaki were sent to Unzen, where they were tortured to death. It is truly a hell. Now, you can also enjoy the famous onsen tamago (hot spring eggs) and foot steam bath in Unzen Hell. Of course, you are also welcome to take a day trip to the nearby ryokan hotels!

Privately owned back hills are gaining popularity as a great spot for viewing autumn foliage.
About 30 years ago, a local restaurant owner planted about 1,000 maple trees on the hill behind his house, which eventually became a tourist attraction. During the fall foliage season, the vast hill behind his house is open to the public and even lit up at night. In addition to maple trees, 120 species of autumn foliage plants are planted, and the area is equipped with walking paths, rest benches, a small pond, toilets, and other facilities. During the season, kitchen cars and other vehicles are available to sell coffee and light meals. Visitors can spend a relaxing late autumn day viewing the autumn leaves.
