Omura Sushi is a traditional sushi dish that originated from a victory celebration at a long-established restaurant that used to be the kitchen guard of the Omura Clan.
Omurazushi, a type of pressed sushi, consists of seasoned carrots, kanpyo, shiitake mushrooms, etc., sandwiched between vinegared rice and topped with a richly-sprinkled egg. This local delicacy is said to have originated in the Sengoku period (1467-1568), when sushi was prepared to reward victorious soldiers who had retaken their territory. Umegae-so, located in the precincts of Omura Shrine in Omura Park, the ruins of Kushima Castle, was founded in 1894 by the previous generation who supported the Omura clan as a kitchen keeper. The restaurant offers a teahouse menu that allows customers to enjoy Omura Sushi without reservations, as well as courses that can be enjoyed in a luxurious kaiseki setting. Other menu items include udon noodles and sweet dishes. Reservations for evening meals are required at least two days in advance.

The cherry blossoms are beautiful, and the dry landscape stone garden conveys the atmosphere of the olden days.
Enryu-ji Temple was built to enshrine the souls of successive Tokugawa shoguns, and was abandoned during the Meiji period (1868-1912). Today, the temple is known as Omura Gokoku-jinja Shrine. The stone garden, which utilizes the slope of the temple grounds in a karesansui (dry landscape garden) style, is a masterpiece that conveys the style of the early Edo period. The cherry blossoms that bloom from the edge of the pond to the steps are also magnificent, and the sight of the petals floating on the water is especially beautiful. The garden has been designated as a national monument.

A promenade is maintained to the basin of the waterfall. The Rhododendron Garden is planted with about 6,000 rhododendrons of more than 40 species from around the world, and the best time to view them is from late March to late April. The Rhododendron Festival is held during this period, and the 60-year-old "Taiyo" variety of rhododendron at the entrance to the Rhododendron Garden is a must-see.
