Overcoming the damage from the Kumamoto earthquake, 2300 years of history is being passed on to the future.
Aso Shrine, the first shrine in Higo Province, enshrines 12 family deities, including Takeiwatatsunomikoto, grandson of Emperor Jinmu and the founder of Aso, and boasts a history of approximately 2300 years. While the Aso Shrine has long been associated with volcanic worship, with the crater of Mt. Aso as the deity, it is also believed to bring good luck in matchmaking and longevity. It is the head shrine of the 500 or so Aso shrines in Japan. The current shrine buildings were rebuilt between 1835 and 1850 with donations from the Kumamoto clan. Six of the buildings, including the temple and the tower gate, are National Important Cultural Properties. The tower gate, in particular, was the largest in Kyushu and considered one of the "three largest tower gates in Japan," but it collapsed during the Kumamoto earthquake. The worship hall also collapsed, but restoration work is currently underway, and the worship hall will be fully restored in July 2021, and the tower gate in December 2023.

Even a hermit is enchanted by the pink color of Miyama-kirishima.
A straight course from Aso Shrine to Senan-kyo Gorge on Senan-kyo Road. The gorge is located at the northern foot of Takadake, one of the central craters of the Aso Caldera, at an altitude of about 900 meters, and is known as a place where the Reverdin's Blue flowers grow in colonies. About 50,000 Miyama-kirishima trees bloom from mid to late May, turning the entire area pink. The name "Sennai Gorge" comes from the fact that the scenery is so beautiful that it would intoxicate a hermit. From the observatory, you can see the caldera area, the outer rim of the Aso Mountains, and the Kujyu mountain range in Oita Prefecture. There is also a free information center with climbing tools on display, and it is also a base for climbing Mt.

Ruins of Matouseki Ochaya and Hayataka Tenmangu Shrine
Aso also has historical sites of the Shogun's visit to Aso. The ruins of the Hosokawa family teahouse is a good place to enjoy the autumn leaves.
12 minutes via Route 57. The "Mato-ishi Ochaya (teahouse) Site" is located along the old Bungo Highway in the Ogashi area. It is the site of a residence and garden where the Hosokawa clan's traveling party used to rest for lunch after departing from Kumamoto Castle during the Edo period. The garden is famous for its fountain that draws water from the northern outer rim of the mountain, and is designated as a cultural asset by the city. The fountain is a city-designated cultural asset and has been selected as one of the 100 best fountains in the prefecture. It is a favorite spot for viewing the autumn foliage among locals. The stone pavement along Bungo Kaido, built in the Edo period (1603-1867), is also a charming sight. On the other hand, the autumn leaves along the approach to the Hayataka Tenmangu Shrine adjacent to the "Matoseki Tea House Ruins" are also beautiful. The shrine was built by Tsunatoshi Hosokawa, feudal lord of the Higo domain, and legend has it that a white hawk perched on a pole of a ship to save it from rough seas. The ema (votive tablet) in the main shrine was dedicated by Lord Hosokawa Nobunori in 1716, and the crane plaque was dedicated by Lord Hosokawa Saigo in 1842.

Seeing Nakadake (Mt. Nakadake) raising a plume of smoke Learn about Aso's volcanic energy
Located in front of Kusasenri, the museum's crater widescreen allows visitors to observe the crater in real time through two cameras installed on the Nakadake crater wall. The sound of the crater can also be heard at the same time, allowing visitors to see the crater in real time even when the crater cannot be visited due to eruption conditions. The museum also has permanent exhibits on the origin, topography, and geology of the Aso volcano, volcanoes in Japan and around the world, volcanic activities of Nakadake, and the relationship between grasslands and people, as well as flora and fauna, etc. On the third floor, visitors can watch a movie about the Aso volcano and people's lives in the five-sided multi hall. In addition, a guided trekking course is available at the Guide Center.
A thousand miles of green grass and a thousand miles of volcanic rock are Ultraman and the world of the dark universe!
Kusasenri, which stretches in front of the Aso Volcano Museum, is one of the symbolic landscapes of Aso. A field of green grass spreads out beneath Mt. Nakadake, which is emitting a plume of smoke, and grazing red cows graze peacefully. The area covers an area of 785,000 square meters, straddling Aso City and Minami Aso Village. There are two ponds in Kusasenri, which look like the face of Ultraman when viewed from Mt. That is also a sight to behold. In contrast to Kusasenri is Sunasenri, where the view from the top of Mt. From Kusasenri to the crater group of Nakadake, the foot of the crater is a volcanic rocky area where not even grass or trees grow. The distance from Kusasenri is less than 4 km. It is the remains of an old crater, 300 meters wide and one kilometer long. The bare rock surface is covered with black volcanic sand, and craters have been formed by volcanic bombs sent by the eruption. Is this a lunar world or a dark space planet? Depending on the eruption status of Nakadake, it may be inaccessible. The wide range of green grasslands and barren lands is another attraction of Aso.

A small mountain that looks like a bowl covered with rice, Yonezuka. It is approximately 80 meters high and is said to have been formed by an eruption about 3,300 years ago. It is characterized by a large depression at the top. It is actually the remains of a crater. The slopes are covered with soft grassland, which turns green from spring to summer. The view is beautiful against the well-balanced shape of the mountain. In the past, even beginners could easily climb the mountain, but because of this, the trail is now closed due to many ill-mannered tramps.
Kumamoto Earthquake, which was struck by two major earthquakes. The site of a damaged university was turned into a quake-stricken site.
At 21:26 on April 14, 2016, a pre-earthquake magnitude of 6.5 occurred. At 1:25 a.m. on April 16, the main quake of magnitude 7.3 occurred. The death toll from these two major earthquakes, unprecedented in recorded history, was 272. Among them were students at Tokai University Aso. The "Kumamoto Earthquake Museum KIOKU" opened on July 15, 2023 to preserve and exhibit the former Tokai University Aso Building No. 1, which was spared from collapse, along with the fault line as earthquake remains. The core facility consists of KIOKU (exhibition facility) and the earthquake remains (former Building No. 1 and surface earthquake fault). Visitors can look back on "that time" of the earthquake through the actual remains of the earthquake and videos showing what it was like at the time. Visitors can also see with their own eyes the surface earthquake fault that caused the ground to rise, crack, and shift laterally. In addition, a statue of "Robin" has been installed on the site as part of the ONE PIECE Kumamoto Reconstruction Project.
