Munakata City, blessed with a good natural harbor, is a treasure trove of seafood. Among them, horse mackerel, a representative of Fukuoka Prefecture's summer bluefish, is a local fish that the Munakata Fisheries Cooperative puts a great deal of effort into. Only natural horse mackerels caught by the Kanesaki horse mackerel fishing fleet that are 26 cm or longer are given the brand name "Tsuri Aji Genchan. The fish are kept under strict freshness control, and no human hands touch them from the time they are caught to the time they are cooked. The rough seas of the Genkai Sea have given the fish a firm, fatty flesh. It can be enjoyed at local restaurants and inns. The season is from April to December.

Munakata Taisha Shrine
A World Cultural Heritage site that houses 80,000 national treasures, which are also worshipped by drivers.
One of the oldest shrines in Japanese mythology, it is the head shrine of Munakata Shrine, Itsukushima Shrine, and Munakata Sanjinjin Shrine, which enshrine the three deities of Munakata, the oldest of the seven thousand or so shrines located throughout Japan. The three shrines are Okitsumiya (the eldest, Tagorihime no Kami) on Okinoshima Island, where the entire island is sacred and women are still forbidden; Nakatsumiya (the second, Tagitsuhime no Kami) on Oshima Island, about 11 km off the mainland; and Henkitsumiya (the third, Ichikishimahime no Kami) with its main shrine on Tajima, Munakata City on the mainland. The three shrines are collectively called Munakata-taisha (Munakata Grand Shrine). On Okinoshima Island, a large number of ancient ritual remains and ornaments dating from the 4th to 9th centuries have been excavated. In 2017, the island was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site as "Okinoshima Island, Munakata, and Related Properties". The shrine has long been worshipped as a god of maritime and traffic safety, and many drivers of automobiles as well as marine-related vehicles visit the shrine to pray for safety. The Takamiya Festival Hall, where the three goddesses descended from, is famous as a sacred power spot.

Founded 3 years before the arrival of the black ships, the soy sauce brewery preserves the traditional taste of Munakata Kamiminato.
Fukuoka Prefecture actually has the largest number of soy sauce breweries in Japan. Visiting small soy sauce breweries is a good way to find local flavors. This brewery is a long-established soy sauce brewery that has been making soy sauce since 1850. Kamiminato, a port town facing the Genkai Sea, has long been rich in delicious seafood and a major consumer of soy sauce, which is why it was founded. The company boasts a mild flavor with a low salt content, and the sixth-generation head of the company now carries on the traditional taste. The company produces processed soy sauce products such as ponzu soy sauce, ume paste, tare (sauce), and dashi (broth), while taking full advantage of the unique flavor of amakuchi soy sauce. In addition to the special soy sauce for egg, there are many other varieties such as yogurt soy sauce, bread soy sauce, and cheese soy sauce. 360ml small size soy sauce is also available for easy purchase. In the back of the store is a museum displaying old brewing equipment and daily utensils from the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras, which is open to all visitors.
Empress Jingu's Miracle "Path of Light" Full of Sights and Events
It was founded about 1,700 years ago, and its deities are Empress Jingu, the Great Goddess of Katsumura, and the Great Goddess of Katsuyori. It is said that during Empress Jingu's expedition to the continent, she prayed for good luck and safe voyage from the top of Miyajitake overlooking the Genkai Sea. The main shrine overlooks the sea at the end of the approach to the temple, and in February and October, a "path of light" appears, illuminating the approach in a straight line with the light of the setting sun over the Genkai Sea. This solemn and mysterious scene is well known throughout Japan through commercials and other media. The large shimenawa (sacred rope) in the main shrine is the largest in Japan, measuring 2.6 meters in diameter, 11 meters in length, and weighing 3 tons. Moreover, the rope is replaced every year. The shrine also boasts the largest taiko drum (2.2 meters in diameter), the largest drum made entirely of domestic materials in Japan, and the largest bell in Japan, weighing 450 kg. The shrine also boasts a variety of other treasures, including national treasures, as well as a variety of annual events.
