The Terraced Rice Fields of Kawahara: An Encounter with the Original Japanese Landscape
The terraced rice fields are located about 13 minutes from "Aso Marron Tree" via Prefectural Road No. 28, just before Shiraito Waterfall. This area has a vast expanse of terraced rice paddies, including the Uryusako terraced paddies. The terraced paddy fields, which curve intricately along the mountain surface, offer beautiful scenery from season to season. Although some photographers visit this area to take pictures, it is not well known to the general public, and even the websites of the village tourism section and the tourism association provide little information about it. One reason may be that the terraced rice fields were damaged by the Kumamoto earthquake, and the number of farmers who have left the village has increased. It is true that some of the terraced rice paddies are now fallow. But on the other hand, isn't it one of the best parts of traveling by car to take pictures of these undiscovered spots?
Bathe in negative ions at Nishihara Village's power spots!
Aso erupted hundreds of thousands of years ago. The waterfall was selected as one of the "100 Best Waterfalls in Kumamoto Prefecture" and was so named because the water falling from the 20-meter drop looks like a white thread. It is also known as "Yosehime no Taki" (Yosehime Falls), which refers to the legend of "Yosehime," a legend passed down in the waterfall. The legend is based on the tragedy of a man who was married to a giant snake that disguised itself as a beautiful woman, or the legend of the giant snake. Aside from this, many people visit Shiraito Falls in summer in search of coolness. At the nearby Shiraito Falls Exchange Center "Itomai Kiki," visitors can enjoy somen-nagashi, a traditional Japanese noodle dish. From July to September each year, the waterfall is lit up at night, creating a fantastic sight as the spray of the waterfall shines brightly.

Kumamoto Earthquake, which was struck by two major earthquakes. The site of a damaged university was turned into a quake-stricken site.
At 21:26 on April 14, 2016, a pre-earthquake magnitude of 6.5 occurred. At 1:25 a.m. on April 16, the main quake of magnitude 7.3 occurred. The death toll from these two major earthquakes, unprecedented in recorded history, was 272. Among them were students at Tokai University Aso. The "Kumamoto Earthquake Museum KIOKU" opened on July 15, 2023 to preserve and exhibit the former Tokai University Aso Building No. 1, which was spared from collapse, along with the fault line as earthquake remains. The core facility consists of KIOKU (exhibition facility) and the earthquake remains (former Building No. 1 and surface earthquake fault). Visitors can look back on "that time" of the earthquake through the actual remains of the earthquake and videos showing what it was like at the time. Visitors can also see with their own eyes the surface earthquake fault that caused the ground to rise, crack, and shift laterally. In addition, a statue of "Robin" has been installed on the site as part of the ONE PIECE Kumamoto Reconstruction Project.
