Kannon cherry (Prunus incisa)
Slowly gaining popularity in recent years Mountain cherry blossoms bloom against the backdrop of the Aso landscape
Aso is famous for its single cherry tree, the 400-year-old Isshin Gyo cherry tree. It is only 6 minutes away from the roadside station Asobano-no-Sato Kugino. However, I dare you to visit Kannon-zakura here. It is a mountain cherry tree planted in a pasture on the mountainside of the outer rim of Minamiaso. The tree is said to be about 100 years old. It has become popular in recent years for the beautiful shape of the tree, which blooms against the backdrop of the Aso mountains. The name "Kannon-zakura" (meaning "Goddess of Mercy") comes from the fact that the Bato Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) is enshrined nearby. Because it is a private ranch, it is usually closed to the public, but only during the Kannon-zakura blooming season. Please note that you cannot enter the pasture from the nearby Kannonzakura Park. Use the Kannonzakura parking lot in Kishino. It is a 12-minute drive from Roadside Station Asomo-no-Sato Kigino. (Photo courtesy of above / Kumamoto Prefectural Tourism Federation)

Shirakawa water source
The Land of Fire is a Land of Water with Delicious Water Bring your own PET bottles and tour the springs.
Aso, the land of fire, is also the land of water. This is because Aso has a lot of rainfall, which flows underground and eventually gushes out as spring water above ground. There are countless spots in Aso with pure spring water, one of which is the Shirakawa Suigen (Shirakawa Water Source). One of them is Shirakawa Suigen, which is one of the most representative springs in Aso, gushing out 60 tons of water per minute. The water bubbles up from the bottom of the pond and makes one feel cool and refreshing. Of course, the water is drinkable, so a plastic bottle is a must. There are many springs in the Shirakawa Suigen area, so why not try a spring water rally? Don't forget to pay 100 yen for cooperation in protecting the water source environment.

Takamori Spring Tunnel Park
Railroad Tunnels Turned Spring Tunnels Tunnels are an oasis of coolness even in summer
In February 1975, water suddenly gushed out during construction of a tunnel connecting the Takachiho and Takamori lines of the former Japanese National Railways. After that, the water continued to flow out frequently, and the construction work was abandoned after digging a tunnel for about 2 kilometers. After that, a park was developed and this park was turned into a spring spot. The water gushes out at a rate of 32 tons per minute and is used as the town's water source for drinking and agricultural purposes. A museum, the Yusuikan (spring water museum), is located at the top of the tunnel. The dimly lit tunnel is illuminated with a "water pearl" mechanism that makes the falling water look like a ball of water. The temperature is a cool 17 degrees throughout the year, making it the perfect place to escape the heat in the summer. The "Tanabata Festival" is held every July, and the "Christmas Fantasy" in December.
Admission 300 yen for adults, 100 yen for children

Minamiaso Railway Trolley Train
All lines finally reopened after the Kumamoto earthquake! The wind of Aso blowing from the train window is refreshing!
On July 15, 2023, the entire line resumed operation for the first time in 7 years and 3 months. A total of 17.7 km between Takamori and Tatsuno stations reopened. The trolley train "Yusuge-go" will also operate twice a day. The one-way trip takes 55 minutes. On fine days, the train runs slowly with the windows open and the fresh wind of Aso blowing through the windows. The train also offers a guided tour of the scenery along the route, and runs on the No. 1 Shirakawa Bridge, which used to be the tallest bridge on the former Japanese National Railways, standing 60 meters above the Shirakawa River to the rail surface. This is the most powerful and attractive part of the railroad. It is a must-see for railroad enthusiasts. Reservations for the trolley train should be made online at least 10 days to 3 days in advance.

A thousand miles of green grass and a thousand miles of volcanic rock are Ultraman and the world of the dark universe!
Kusasenri, which stretches in front of the Aso Volcano Museum, is one of the symbolic landscapes of Aso. A field of green grass spreads out beneath Mt. Nakadake, which is emitting a plume of smoke, and grazing red cows graze peacefully. The area covers an area of 785,000 square meters, straddling Aso City and Minami Aso Village. There are two ponds in Kusasenri, which look like the face of Ultraman when viewed from Mt. That is also a sight to behold. In contrast to Kusasenri is Sunasenri, where the view from the top of Mt. From Kusasenri to the crater group of Nakadake, the foot of the crater is a volcanic rocky area where not even grass or trees grow. The distance from Kusasenri is less than 4 km. It is the remains of an old crater, 300 meters wide and one kilometer long. The bare rock surface is covered with black volcanic sand, and craters have been formed by volcanic bombs sent by the eruption. Is this a lunar world or a dark space planet? Depending on the eruption status of Nakadake, it may be inaccessible. The wide range of green grasslands and barren lands is another attraction of Aso.

Kumamoto Earthquake, which was struck by two major earthquakes. The site of a damaged university was turned into a quake-stricken site.
At 21:26 on April 14, 2016, a pre-earthquake magnitude of 6.5 occurred. At 1:25 a.m. on April 16, the main quake of magnitude 7.3 occurred. The death toll from these two major earthquakes, unprecedented in recorded history, was 272. Among them were students at Tokai University Aso. The "Kumamoto Earthquake Museum KIOKU" opened on July 15, 2023 to preserve and exhibit the former Tokai University Aso Building No. 1, which was spared from collapse, along with the fault line as earthquake remains. The core facility consists of KIOKU (exhibition facility) and the earthquake remains (former Building No. 1 and surface earthquake fault). Visitors can look back on "that time" of the earthquake through the actual remains of the earthquake and videos showing what it was like at the time. Visitors can also see with their own eyes the surface earthquake fault that caused the ground to rise, crack, and shift laterally. In addition, a statue of "Robin" has been installed on the site as part of the ONE PIECE Kumamoto Reconstruction Project.
