Awashima Shrine

Popular among women for praying for love fulfillment All women's wishes will come true!

The shrine is built in a cave jutting out from the rock, which makes it look as if it is floating on the sea, a rarity in Japan. The deity is Sukunabikono-no-mikoto, who together with Okuninushi no-mikoto created the nation of Japan, and is regarded as the god of national stability and protection of navigation, as well as the god of marriage and safe childbirth. It is said that one of the wishes of women in particular will surely be granted. At low tide, looking out to sea from the shrine, a rock with a heart-shaped hole can be seen, and it is said that if you throw in a "wish stone" that has been purified at Awashima Shrine, your wish will come true. The name of the stone is "Kanoi-ishi," or "wish stone. The monument "Yui" in the park is an excellent photo spot as a symbol of the Love Fulfillment Road. Many couples make a wish on the "En" monument, which is covered with many love keys.

Japan Sea coastline

Striped pattern of the sea dyed in madder red.

The area of Madama Beach where Awashima Shrine is located is the only place in Oita Prefecture where you can watch the setting sun sink into the horizon. The contrast between the orange sunset sparkling on the surface of the water and the striped pattern of the mud flat is so striking that it has been selected as one of the "100 best sunsets in Japan. It would be a shame not to capture this fantastic scenery in photographs! The colors of the sunset vary slightly depending on the season, temperature, and weather. It is always impressive no matter how many times you visit.

Ryokoji Temple

A fundamental center for mountain ascetic monks with a history of more than 1,300 years

The Kunitachi Peninsula is where the unique Buddhist culture of Rokugo-Mansan, a syncretism of Shintoism and Buddhism, flourished. Ryokoji Temple, the core of the Rokko-Mansan Buddhist tradition, is located halfway up Ryoko Mountain and is said to have been founded by Ninkon Bosatsu in 718 (2nd year of Yoro). Nakayama Honji Temple, which was intended for ascetic practices, flourished as a center for mountain asceticism. In the Edo period (1603-1867), it became the highest prayer hall of the Kitsuki clan and supervised all the mountains as the Soji-in Temple of Rokugo Manzan. On either side of the stone steps leading to the temple gate stands one of the largest stone Kongorikishi (Nio) statues in the Kunisaki Peninsula (total height 245 cm, height 230 cm), said to have been made in the late Edo period. Combined with the surrounding dense old trees, it stands out for its solemn appearance. The temple grounds have been designated as one of the 100 best forests in Japan for forest bathing. It is famous for its fresh greenery and autumn foliage. In the inner sanctuary, there is a place to pray for the birth of a child.

temple in which resided a member of nobility or imperial family

The oldest wooden building in Kyushu and a national treasure. The main statue, a seated Amida Nyorai, is a national treasure.

This temple of the Tendai sect was established in the Heian period (794-1185) as a clan temple of the Grand Shrine of Usa Jingu. The Amida Hall is the oldest existing wooden structure in Kyushu and is designated as a national treasure. It is also one of the three Amida halls in Japan, along with the Hōōōdō Hall of Byōdōin Temple in Uji and the Konjikidō Hall of Chūson-ji Temple in Hiraizumi. The main image of a seated wooden Amida Nyorai (Amitabha) is said to have been built by Ninkon Bosatsu (Nichinon Bosatsu) from a large close-cut tree, and is a National Important Cultural Property. The interior of the hall is decorated with wall paintings depicting the world of the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, which have faded over the years, but were once painted in rich colors. Other structures around the hall include a nimonishi (stone) with inscriptions of Sanskrit characters, a kasatoba (a pagoda) from the Kamakura period (1185-1333), and a kokuto-to (pagoda) from the Muromachi period (1333-1568), all of which remind visitors of the prosperity of Fuki-ji in the past. There is a soba (buckwheat noodle) restaurant and inn run by the temple's priest (the wife of the temple's abbess) on the side of the temple, so why not have a soba lunch?

Manor pioneered in the Heian Period Japanese original landscape of green rice paddies

This is the site of a manor house in the Heian period that remains in the Tasome Basin in the southern part of the Kunisaki Peninsula. The manor was managed as the manor of the Usa Jingu Shrine, and the remains of residences of manor officials and people of the manor, weirs and waterways that carry water, and sawtooth oak forests and reservoirs that recharge the water remain. In 2010, the area was selected as a national Important Cultural Landscape, and in December of the following year, it was registered as a UNESCO Future Heritage site. In May 2013, the entire area including the Kunisaki Peninsula was recognized as a World Agricultural Heritage site. The "manor rice" harvested at Tasome-so can be purchased at nearby produce stands.

Kumano Buddha

Dainichi Nyorai statue with clear nose and eyes Fudo Myoo statue with round face

The huge stone Buddha is located at the end of a steep stone staircase called "Oni no Ishidan" from the torii gate of Kumano-sha Shrine. On the right is Dainichi Nyorai, the oldest stone Buddha in Oita Prefecture, said to have been created in the late Heian period (794-1192), and on the left is Fudo Myoo, said to have been created in the early Kamakura period (1192-1333). It is one of the largest Buddha statues in Japan and is designated as a national important cultural property. Dainichi Nyorai is 681 cm tall, with sharply carved spiral hair, firm cheeks, and clear eyes and nose. Three seed mandalas in the Kumano mandala style are carved on the upper part of the statue, and it is thought that they were carved in the Kamakura period (1185-1333), when the Kumano faith was introduced to the area. The statue of Fudo Myoo is 807 cm tall and is carved in the form of a triad with two children on either side. The round face and gentle, humorous expression on the face are characteristic of this statue, and the heaven-and-earth eyes and pigtail can be seen, as well as the sword in his hand. It is a National Important Cultural Property and a National Historic Site. Sneakers are required for the Oni no Ishidan (stone steps of demons). A walking stick is available for rent at the information desk.

hall with an enshrined statue of Maki (at a Shingon temple)

Buddhist statues from the Heian period (794-1192)! All of them are national important cultural properties!

The name of the temple is Maki-san Denjoji. It is said to have been founded by Nimon Bosatsu in 718, and at the time was the largest temple in Rokugomansan with 36 monks. The temples of Rokugomansan were divided into three categories based on the purpose of their activities: the head temple for learning, the nakayama for ascetic practices, and the suenzan for proselytizing. The present main hall was built in the Edo period (1603-1868), and in the storehouse, newly constructed in the 1960s and 1970s (Showa 40s), there are nine Heian statues of Buddha, including a seated Amida Nyorai, a standing statue of Fudo Myoo, a statue of Daimeitoku Myoo, a statue of Nidoji and a statue of Shitenno, which strongly reflect the flourishing Rokugo-Mansan culture from the Heian period through the middle ages. All of them are designated as National Important Cultural Properties. All of them are designated as National Important Cultural Properties.
