Funakoya Mineral Spring Area

Soak in the highly concentrated carbonated spring water, which is also drinkable, and relieve your fatigue!

Funakoya Hot Spring Village was once designated as a therapeutic hot spring for war wounded soldiers and was loved by cultural figures such as Soseki Natsume. The carbonic acid spring, said to have the highest iron content in Japan, is effective for gastrointestinal problems and anemia when drunk, and for women's diseases and neuralgia when bathed. The Funakoya Kosenjo, with its eye-catching retro building, is the symbol of this hot spring resort. The facility allows anyone to freely draw carbonic acid spring water, which can also be drunk, but be sure to visit the Buddhist image inside the facility before using the spring water, as it is said to be a sacred spring.

Nagata Spa

One of the highest carbonic acid content in Japan! Cold mineral spring like a natural cider

Located across the Yabe River from Funakoya Onsenkyo, Shin Funakoya Onsenkyo boasts one of the highest carbonic acid contents in Japan. The mineral spring water, which can be drawn from the retro-looking spa, tastes like cider without the sweetness. It has no peculiar taste and is well known for its delicious taste when brewed into tea or coffee. It is said to be effective for gastrointestinal disorders, chronic digestive disorders, and constipation. Tasting is free, but there are faucets for 20 yen and 100 yen for those who wish to draw water to take home. 20 yen is about 4.5 liters. There is also a footbath in the parking lot in front of the mineral spring and a sales counter for local products.

Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine and Koinoki Shrine

The last shrine of Kyushu's two major tenmangu shrines is the nation's only god of love.

The main shrine, Mizuta Tenmangu, was built in the Kamakura period (1185-1333). It enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, and was the guardian deity of Mizuta no Sho, an important manor in Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. It is still revered today as one of the two largest Tenmangu shrines in Kyushu, following Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. The main shrine is designated as a cultural property of Fukuoka Prefecture. There are 21 subordinate shrines, the most popular of which is Koiki Shrine, which was also built at the time of Tenmangu's founding. Koinoki-jinja Shrine has been in existence since Tenmangu Shrine was built, and its deity is Koinomikoto, a goddess of love. It is said that the shrine was built to comfort the soul of Sugawara Michizane, who was thinking of his wife and children left behind in the capital. Today, the shrine is the only "god of love" in Japan, winning the hearts of young women.

Kiyomizu-dera Temple Main Temple Garden

Especially beautiful in the season of fresh green and yellow leaves.

Motoyoshiyama Kiyomizu-dera Temple is an ancient temple with a history of more than 1,200 years, founded by Dengyo Daishi, the founder of the Tendai sect of Buddhism. The Honbo Garden, a nationally designated place of scenic beauty, is said to have been created in the Muromachi period (1336-1573) by the painter-monk Sesshu (1420-1506). The garden is a beautiful place to visit in spring, summer, fall, and winter, but it is especially beautiful in autumn, when the fresh green leaves and vivid colors of the trees are in full bloom. In front of the main temple is a large gingko tree, which becomes a carpet of golden leaves in the fall when the leaves turn yellow. Nearby stands a monument in the handwriting of Kitahara Hakushu.

Old pine shrine (Nagata's large ginkgo tree)

One of the largest in Fukuoka Prefecture! The yellow leaves of the large ginkgo tree are also breathtaking!

The tree is said to have been planted 400 years ago as a sacred tree in the Oomatsu Shrine in Miyama City, and was designated as a special natural monument by the prefecture in 2004. The root circumference is said to be the largest among ginkgo trees in Fukuoka Prefecture. The lush foliage in summer is also beautiful, and in autumn, when the leaves turn yellow, the "Nagata Ginkgo Yellow Leaf Festival" is held. The festival features a children's portable shrine, sales of agricultural products, and a tasting of prepared foods.
