Imari Shrine
The general shrine of Imari with three shrines enshrined together. A power spot with an eye-catching Chinese-style gate.

The former prefectural shrines of Kohitsu Shrine, Totoshima Shrine, and Iwakuri Shrine, which were established in 770 A.D., were enshrined together and became Imari Shrine in 1962. The torii gates of the former Totoshima Shrine and Iwakuri Shrine remain on the shrine grounds. Kachibana Shrine is named after the legend that Tadoki-no-Kakumi, who was ordered by Emperor Taruhito to bring back "tojiki-no-Kakumi," a special medicine for longevity, stopped by the shrine on his way back to Japan. As the first place in Japan where tachibana came to Japan, it was called "Tachibana-no-miya" (Shrine of Tachibana). Because of this, Nakajima Shrine, which enshrines Tadomamori, is enshrined near the main shrine as a shrine within the precincts of the temple. Tadomamamori is also the god of confectionery, and a bust of Taichiro Morinaga, the founder of Morinaga Seika, who was born in Imari, is located in the precincts of the shrine.

Imari City Pottery Merchant Museum
Pottery merchants who made their fortune in Old Imari Prosperity told by a merchant house with white walls and storehouses
.jpg)
Hizen pottery, loved by European royalty and aristocracy, was called "Imariyaki" because it was brought from the port of Imari. Many pottery merchants lived in Imari, and the Inuzuka family, in particular, made a fortune as one of the leading pottery merchants in Imari Tsu. The descendants of the Inuzuka family bequeathed the house to Imari City, and it has been open to the public as the "Imari City Pottery Merchant House Museum" since 1991. It is a prestigious merchant house with white walls and earthen storehouse structure, and exhibits Ko-Imari ceramics from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period in the long and narrow "eel bed" interior.

Okawachiyama, the home of hidden kilns
The site of the Nabeshima Clan's official kiln, which produced masterpieces using the highest technology
★.jpg)
During the Edo period, the Nabeshima clan's official kiln was located in this area. Porcelain produced under the strict control of the clan was presented to the Imperial Court, the shogunate, and various feudal lords. Masterpieces such as "Iro-nabeshima," "Nabeshima Sometsuke," and "Nabeshima Celadon Ware" were produced, and the advanced techniques were protected by a barrier to prevent them from being leaked to others. The view of the chimneys towering over the steep mountains in the background is reminiscent of a bygone era, and is truly the atmosphere of a "village of unexplored kilns. Even today, the narrow valley is dotted with more than 30 kiln studios, a park for domain kilns, restaurants, and other facilities, all of which are compactly organized so that visitors can easily make a round of the area.

Arita Porcelain Park
Arita's charms are being introduced to the world! Theme Park for Sake and Vessels

This theme park is unique to the village of Arita-yaki, Japan's world-class ceramics. The first thing that catches the eye is the building that recreates the Zwinger Palace in Dresden, Germany. The museum exhibits early Arita-yaki, Ko-Imari, Kakiemon, and other porcelain from the peak of the Edo and Meiji periods. Also on display is a large 182-centimeter-high vase that was exhibited at the Vienna World Exposition in the 1870s. The vast park is dotted with a hands-on workshop where visitors can try their hand at Arita-yaki pottery (rokuroku) pulling and painting, a baroque garden, a climbing kiln, restaurants, and more. The park is operated by a sake brewery, and there is also a souvenir store where visitors can sample limited edition sake, sake, and shochu (distilled spirit).

Izumiyama Magnet Field
The origin of Arita-yaki and Imari-yaki porcelain is here. A treasure trove of raw materials for beautiful white porcelain.

In the early 17th century, the Korean potter Ri Sanpei and others discovered high-quality pottery stones in Mt. This led to the first successful mass production of porcelain in Japan. The Senzan magnet field is the starting point of the 400-year history of Arita-yaki porcelain, which has won the admiration of domestic feudal lords and others, and attracted people from all over Europe. In 1980, part of the site was designated as a national historic site. The area is now a park where visitors can see the magnet site, and blue ceramic pieces are embedded in the sidewalk from the parking lot to the Izumiyama Magnet Site. Next to the magnet site is the Arita Town History and Folklore Museum, which exhibits Arita-yaki pottery techniques, tools, and pottery shards. The museum introduces the history of Arita and the lives of the people of the Sarayama area, which became the center of Arita-yaki pottery. (Photo courtesy of the Saga Prefecture Tourism Federation)

Tsuchiya Terraced Paddy Fields
Beautiful sunset over the Sea of Genkai. One of the 100 most scenic spots of terraced rice fields in Japan.

From Imari City, drive north on Route 204 and cross the 225-meter-long Fukushima Ohashi Bridge to a small island in Matsuura City, Nagasaki Prefecture. The Tsuchiya terraced rice paddies in Fukushima, which is located in Imari Bay and has a population of about 3,000, are reputed to be one of the most spectacular among the 100 best terraced rice paddies in Japan. The 400 terraced rice paddies, cultivated from the Meiji period to the early Showa period, stretch in a beautiful curve all the way to the coast. The evening view is especially beautiful during the rice planting season from late April to early May. The water in the terraced rice paddies reflects the setting sun, creating a dramatic scene of light and shadow. In summer, the contrast between the lush green of the rice plants and the blue of the sky and the sea is beautiful. In September, the "Tsuchiya Tanada Fire Festival" is held and 3,000 torches are lit along the footpaths between the terraced rice paddies. In 2012, it was recognized as a Japan Night View Heritage Site (lit-up night view heritage). To visit, use the parking lot (observation deck) by the prefectural road except during the "Tsuchiya Tanada no Hi Matsuri (Fire Festival of the Terraced Rice Paddies).
