Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine and Koinoki Shrine

The last shrine of Kyushu's two major tenmangu shrines is the nation's only god of love.

Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine in Honda was founded in the Kamakura period. It enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, and was the guardian deity of Mizuta no Sho, an important manor in Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. It is still revered today as one of the two largest Tenmangu shrines in Kyushu, following Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. The main shrine is designated as a cultural property of Fukuoka Prefecture. There are 21 subordinate shrines, the most popular of which is Koiki Shrine. Koinoki-jinja Shrine has been in existence since Tenmangu Shrine was built, and its deity is Koinomikoto, a goddess of love. It is said that the shrine was built to comfort the soul of Sugawara Michizane, who was thinking of his wife and children left behind in the capital. Today, the shrine is the only "god of love" in Japan, winning the hearts of young women.

History Museum of Sano Tsunetami and the Miezu Naval Station Site

Invisible World Heritage Site to be talked about Exploring the Naval Power of the Saga Clan at the End of the Edo Period

Miezu Naval Station Site is one of the components of the World Heritage Site "Meiji Japan Industrial Revolution Heritage". As the base of the Western-style navy of the Saga Clan at the end of the Edo period, naval education, repair of Western-style ships, and construction of Japan's first practical steamship "Ryoufumaru" were conducted here. Although the site was registered as a World Heritage site as remains that show the naval power of the Saga clan at the end of the Edo period, the remains have been buried, so visitors can see what it was like in those days through a VR scope. A full-scale model of the dry dock remains (part of the dry dock) excavated in 2011 can be seen at the History Museum.
Sano Tsunetami was a samurai of the Saga Clan at the end of the Edo period and is considered one of the Seven Sages of Saga. He was a brilliant scholar and directed the production of the model of steamships and steam cars and the telegraph machine at the Miezu Naval Station. He also founded the "benevolent society" that later became the Japanese Red Cross Society. It provided aid to the wounded, both friend and foe, in the Civil War. Old pine shrine (Nagata's large ginkgo tree)

One of the largest in Fukuoka Prefecture! The autumn foliage is also breathtaking!

The tree is said to have been planted 400 years ago as a sacred tree in the Oomatsu Shrine in Miyama City, and was designated as a special natural monument by the prefecture in 2004. The root circumference is said to be the largest among ginkgo trees in Fukuoka Prefecture. The lush foliage in summer is also beautiful, and in autumn, when the leaves turn yellow, the "Nagata Ginkgo Yellow Leaf Festival" is held. The festival features a children's portable shrine, sales of agricultural products, and a tasting of prepared foods.

Giant Wisteria japonica

The wisteria trellis, covering an area of about 330 tsubo, is 300 years old. The purple flowers spreading overhead are a sight to behold.

The tree is over 300 years old. Located in the precincts of Kumano Shrine, it has been carefully protected by the local preservation society and was designated as a natural monument of the prefecture in 1977. The wisteria trellis in the precincts of the shrine covers an area of approximately 330 tsubo. It is said that the origin of the wisteria trellis dates back to the late Edo period when "Man-san," a sake brewer, brought wisteria berries back from Osaka and planted them at his home. The wisteria is in full bloom from mid to late April, with wisteria flowers over 1 meter in height spreading overhead. The "Nakayama Grand Wisteria Festival," held during the best time to view the wisteria, features illumination and a product exhibition. The festival attracts more than 100,000 visitors during the period.

Suigo Yanagawa River Rafting

The boatman's excellent tune is also pleasant. Tour around the moat built about 420 years ago.

Yanagawa is a watery town with a network of moats covering a total of 930 kilometers in a 4-kilometer radius. The river cruise in Yanagawa is also called "moat tour," as small boats take passengers through the moat that was built to form the castle town approximately 420 years before the construction of Yanagawa Castle. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing boat ride while gazing at the reflection of houses and greenery on the water as the boatman expertly handles the pole and plays his famous tunes. Currently, seven companies operate the boat tours, and some of them offer a course that includes a meal of Yanagawa's specialty, steamed eels. For information on the boat companies, please visit the website of the Yanagawa City Tourist Association.

Yanagawa Hina Festival: Sagemon Tour

Wishing for the healthy growth and happiness of girls.

Sagemon, a hanging decoration used for the Hina Festival in Yanagawa, consists of seven strands of string, each with seven different kinds of lucky charms such as cranes, turtles, and hammers. 7 times 7 gives 49 pieces, and 7 times 7 gives 51 pieces. Two bright Yanagawa mari are added to the top of the string to make 51 pieces. In the past, when life was said to last 50 years, the wish was that a baby girl would live as long as possible. This Yanagawa marari was started by the koshimotos who served the Tachibana family, the former feudal lord of the domain.
In Yanagawa, during the Hina Matsuri (Girls' Festival), houses with girls were opened to the public and their Hina ornaments and Sagemon decorations were shown to the public. This became the "Yanagawa Hina Matsuri Sagemon Meguri" and is open to the public at Yanagawa Gohana and other places. Then there is the "Ohinasama Water Parade. A Gagaku (traditional Japanese court music) band, men and women dressed as male and female dolls, and young girls dressed in traditional Japanese costumes board a boat and slowly make their way down a river course. The festival is held from February 11 to the first Sunday of April every year.
