A guest house with over 100 years of history that tells of the prosperity of Miike Coal Mine
Opened in 1908 to coincide with the opening of the Port of Miike. The Western-style building, which was used as a social gathering place for the Mitsui Zaibatsu, as lodging and entertainment for high-class foreign sailors, and as a guest house for the Imperial Family and political and financial circles, is designated as a tangible cultural property of the city. The interior of the Western-style building, which has been preserved as it was during the prosperous period of coal mining, is a prestigious structure that conveys the history and culture of the area. The elaborate interior and furnishings evoke the romance of the Meiji era. Currently, it is open as a wedding hall and restaurant. The restaurant's cuisine is supervised by French iron chef Hiroyuki Sakai. The restaurant offers beautifully colored lunch and dinner course meals. Visitors can also come for a tour only.

Giant chimney, a registered national tangible cultural property, sung in the Tankobushi (Japanese folk song)
The "Tankobushi," a folk song from Fukuoka Prefecture, begins with the cheerful "Tsuki ga-ade-ade-ade-ade-ade-ade-ade-ade-ade," or "The moon is out, out, out. The Miyaura Mine, which opened in 1888, was one of the main mines of the Miike Coal Mine and produced approximately 40 million tons by the time it closed in 1968. The chimney of the boiler non-smoking facility, 31.2 m high, 2.9 m in diameter at the top, and 4.3 m in diameter at the base, was registered as a national tangible cultural property (building) in 1998, and is now carefully preserved in the Miyaura Mine, which has been developed as a park. The park also exhibits a man-drawn cart and platform that were actually used to go to the bottom of the earth and back, as well as coal mining machinery. (*It is said that "Tankobushi" originated in Tagawa. The chimneys also refer to the two chimneys in Tagawa, and it is said that the "Mitsui Coal Mine" part was sung in Omuta as "Miike Coal Mine"). The Mitsui Miike Coal Mine Railway, which ran near the site of the Miyaura Coal Mine, was discontinued in May 2020. Until then, a Toshiba locomotive No. 18 (photo) manufactured in 1936 was running on the line.

Is the 450-year-old red plum tree a dragon crawling on the ground? Let's admire the plum trees that herald the coming of spring!

Hydrangea blooming at an old temple after the rain. Does rain suit "Ajisai-dera"?
Jorinji Temple, located halfway up Mt. Miike in front of Fukouji Temple, is a family temple of the medieval Miike clan. It is said to have been built in 1199. The eastern garden of the temple grounds is called "Lei Tei," and colorful hydrangeas are planted on the remains of ancient fallen rocks. This is why it is also known as "Hydrangea Temple. The Lei Garden is open to the public during the hydrangea blooming season. The stone pagodas such as the Miike memorial tower and the five-ringed pagoda in the precincts of the temple also have the atmosphere of an old temple. Please note that due to the limited parking space, visitors are urged to take the local bus bound for Fukouji Temple during the hydrangea blooming season, when many visitors come to the temple.
