Michi-no-Eki Kentoshi Furusato-Kan (Roadside Station)

道の駅遣唐使ふるさと館

The only roadside station in the Goto Islands
Souvenirs are gifts from the islands

In the past, Mitsui Raku on Fukue Island was the last port of call for the Japanese Tang Dynasty envoy ships leaving Japan. The station's "Furusato Bussan" does not sell fresh vegetables and other perishable foods to cater to the many visitors to the remote islands, but instead offers a variety of delicacies from the islands of Gotō, including dried Goto fresh fish, the famous Goto udon (dried noodles), camellia oil, and potato and wheat shochu (distilled spirit). Don't miss fish paste such as kamaboko. The restaurant also offers a buffet lunch on weekends and holidays, and at night, by reservation only, Goto beef barbeque is available. At the Manyo Theater, visitors can watch Mitsui's original animated puppet movies based on the themes of the Japanese envoys to China during the Tang Dynasty and Manyo. (Paying a fee).

地元断トツ産物 椿油

Camellia oil, a local product

The Goto Islands are "Japan's number one camellia island" with approximately 10 million camellia bushes. The camellia flower is not only the symbolic flower of the islands, but also an important resource for the people of Goto, who obtain expensive camellia oil. 300 cc of oil can be squeezed from 1 kg of seeds, which contain active ingredients such as oleic acid and linolenic acid, making it not only healthy as cooking oil, but also used in basic cosmetics, shampoo, and hair care products due to its excellent moisturizing properties. It is also used in basic cosmetics, shampoos, and hair styling products. There are several camellia oil factories on the island, and the price depends on the manufacturer and the product.

Fuchinomoto Catholic Tombstones

If you want to have fun in the area

In Mitsui Raku, where it is said that half of the latent Christians who emigrated from Nagasaki's Outer Sea and other areas lived, there is the Mitsui Raku Church and the "Fuchinomoto Catholic Gravesite Group" by the sea. The Catholic cemetery is lined with graves bearing crosses, as if statues of Mary were quietly watching over them. At dusk, the sea turns a madder red, and the silhouettes of the statue of Mary and the crucifix emerge as the golden sun sets, presenting a solemn view as if in a religious painting.

Osezaki Lighthouse

Stretch your legs a bit.

It is located on the Osezaki Cliff at the westernmost tip of Fukue Island, about 45 minutes by car from the station. It was selected as one of the "50 Best Lighthouses in Japan" and was used as a filming location for the movie "The Bad Guy. It is said to have been designed by the English engineer Plato, and was first lit in December 1877. It was reconstructed in 1971, and part of the original lighthouse is said to be relocated and exhibited at the Museum of Maritime Science in Odaiba, Tokyo. The view of the chalk lighthouse and the blue ocean from the nearby observatory is impressive. There is a walking trail to the lighthouse, but visitors should be careful where they step.
