Roadside Station Miyama

道の駅みやま

Local hard workers ship daily.
Lunch is at the food court.

The name of the direct sales stand, "Gamadashimon," means "hard worker" in the local language. Local brand-name vegetables and fruits such as celery, which is a specialty of the area, Setaka eggplants, which are shipped in the Kanto and Kansai regions under the name "Hakata Eggplant," small, sweet Yamakawa oranges, and plums are available for sale. A somewhat unusual feature of the market is the sale of toy flowers. In fact, Miyama City is one of the few places in Japan where domestically produced fireworks are produced. The food court was renovated in 2018, and the number of tenants has increased, offering a full menu that makes the most of Miyama's ingredients. In addition to sweets, freshly made sushi using fresh fish is also popular. Many tourists enjoy lunch here.

This is the one to buy.
Chinese Chimaki with lotus root and wood ear and Unagi Okowa

One of the pleasures of visiting a roadside station that offers a wide variety of local products is to find original products that are available only at the station. Michi-no-Eki Miyama is actively developing original products, such as the "Chinese Chimaki Lotus Root and Wood Ear" (500 yen for 2 pieces, tax included, revised in early July 2024), which went on sale at the end of March 2023, using locally produced lotus root and wood ear (kikurage). Domestically produced kikurage are also rare and valuable. Mainly glutinous rice produced in Miyama is blended with domestically produced rice to create a firm texture. The crispy lotus root and plump, resilient kurage accentuate the texture. In addition, the "Eel Okowa" (980 yen for 2 pieces, tax included), which has been on sale since October of the same year, uses eel, a specialty of the neighboring Yanagawa area. Seasoned with eel sauce made by a fresh fish restaurant in the station, the station manager and his staff developed this dish through trial and error. It has an elegant light flavor with a hint of sweetness. The rice is of course local glutinous rice and domestic rice. Both are available at the frozen goods section.

I'll buy this one too.
Blue Oranges Ponzu" and "Blueberry Dressing."

This is also an original and limited product of Roadside Station Miyama. Yamakawa-cho, Miyama City has long been a production center of mandarin oranges, known by the name "Yamakawa Mikan. Mandarin oranges are picked before they are ripe, and not a few unripe fruits are thrown away. The juice from these unripe mandarin oranges is used to make ponzu vinegar called "Aomikan Ponzu" (680 yen, tax included). It has a gentle sourness without the strong vinegar taste. It goes well with sliced onion salad. On the other hand, the "Blueberry Dressing" (800 yen, tax included) has a hint of sweetness from blueberries, accented with fine purple rind. When developing this product, the company had a hard time controlling the bitterness of blueberries, but they are confident that it goes well not only with raw vegetables, but also with meat dishes.

Celery, a local product of the local area

Soon after the war, celery cultivation began for the Occupation Forces, and locals even call it "celery" in English. Miyama City is responsible for most of the celery in Fukuoka Prefecture, the second largest producer in Japan. Miyama celery is famous throughout Japan for its intense aroma, pleasant crunchiness, and ease of eating. The peak season is from late November to early June. Processed celery products are also diverse, and celery vinegar yogurt made from celery and yogurt is also popular.

If you want to eat, this is the one.
Matcha parfait kiyomizu

If you want to enjoy dessert at the sweet shop "Mizuchaya Jutokuan" in the station's food court, this is the one to try. It is a very popular item that won first place in the "Michi no Eki Chilly Sweets General Election 2021," a competition of chilly sweets at roadside stations in western Japan. The bottom is covered with matcha tokoro-ten, and on top is cream, two kinds of flakes, matcha jelly, matcha ice cream, shiratama (white bean curd) and ogura-an (sweet bean paste), with a drizzle of Kuromitsu (brown sugar). What a luxurious Japanese-style parfait. Don't miss it if you have a sweet tooth. 580 yen (tax included)
