Roadside Station Munakata

道の駅むなかた

The number of visitors is 1.7 million per year!
Full house for fish from the Genkai Sea

Since its opening in April 2008, the station has been packed with visitors every day, with a record of more than 10 million visitors in 6 years and 3 months, 15 million in 9 years and 4 months, and 20 million in 12 years. It is one of the most popular roadside stations in Kyushu, attracting 1.7 million visitors annually. The secret lies in the fresh fish and processed marine products landed daily from the four nearby fishing ports. The fresh fish section accounts for one-third of the sales floor space, but even so, on weekends, the fish is in short supply by mid-morning. Of course, the agricultural products are just as fresh and plentiful. The product hall will be renovated in 2023, and in 2024, the flower gardening and craft goods store "higoro" and the smoothie stand "fratto" will open.

Home-style cooking using a full variety of vegetables from the Genkai Sea and nearby farmers is served in a cafeteria-style setting. There are about 80 dishes, including desserts! A la carte and set menus of seafood rice bowls are also available, so you can choose what you want to eat depending on your mood that day.

Check this out Rice Flour Bakery Hime-no-Ho

Located on the first floor of the annex building on the station grounds, this store specializes in rice-flour bread made from rice harvested in Munakata and Fukutsu cities. Compared to wheat-flour bread, rice-flour bread is fluffy, moist, and glutinous. It also has a hint of sweetness from the rice. There is a wide variety of breads, including side dish breads and sweet breads. You can take out the side dish bread and eat it in the rest room on the second floor.

Munakata Taisha Shrine

One of the oldest shrines in Japan, mentioned in the "Chronicles of Japan" and "Kojiki". It enshrines the three Musakata goddesses, daughters of Amaterasu. Each of the three goddesses is enshrined at Okitsumiya Shrine on Okinoshima Island, where women are prohibited, Nakatsumiya Shrine on Oshima Island, and Henzumiya Shrine on the mainland, collectively called Munakata Taisha. The shrine is also the god of "traffic safety," so why not pray for safety on your road trip?
