Local produce: summer and fall peppers

The season for bell peppers is from June to October. Bell peppers in that season are called summer-autumn bell peppers. Oita Prefecture is one of the largest producers of summer and autumn bell peppers in western Japan, and Bungo-Ono City is the largest bell bell pepper production area in the prefecture. They are characterized by their dark green color, large size, thick flesh, and soft flesh. They are rich in vitamin C, which is not easily destroyed by heating, and contain carotene, vitamin E, potassium, and other nutrients. They are useful in all kinds of dishes due to their color and taste.

The best way to eat it: Toyo no Shamo Oyako-don (oyakodon with chicken and eggs)

Bungo-Ono is also the largest producer of Yutaka no Shamo in the prefecture. The Yutaka no Shamo is the pride of Oita Prefecture, and is a crossbreed between the paternal Shamo and the maternal Kyushu Road breed of chicken. The restaurant at "Michi no Eki Ono" offers a variety of Yutaka no Shamo menus such as oyakodon (chicken and egg on rice bowl), nikomi udon/soba, and curry, all at reasonable prices. The oyakodon with chicken and eggs is a particularly luxurious dish, with the meat, eggs, and broth made from Yutaka Shamo broth. The soft, half-boiled egg, firm and rich meat, and moderately sweet broth intertwine, allowing you to enjoy every bit of the deliciousness of Yutaka Shamo.
