Roadside Station Tarumizu Hamabira Gourmet Information

Local product: Green beans

Kagoshima Prefecture ranks fourth in the nation in green bean production and is the top producer in Kyushu (*2019 Japan Proc. Statistics). Within that Kagoshima Prefecture, Tarumi City boasts by far the largest production. It is said that green beans originated in Central and South America, near Mexico, and were introduced to Japan from China during the Edo period (1603-1868) by Zen monk Ingen no Zenji. This is why they were named "Ingen" (meaning "green beans" in Japanese). The variety that is eaten young was introduced at the end of the Edo period (1603-1867) and differentiated into the variety that is eaten young today.
They are usually eaten as tempura, boiled in salted water with sesame paste, etc. A manufacturer in Tarumi City has developed an instant potage soup with these green beans. Fresh green beans are blended with potatoes, onions, and cheese. The result is a creamy and gentle taste. The three bags in a box cost 490 yen (tax included).

The best place to eat: Buri, kanpachi, kamaage shirasu donburi (rice bowl with yellowtail, kanpachi and kamaage shirasu)

Fresh seafood is by far the best choice for a meal at Roadside Station Tarumizu Hamabira. The restaurant "Farm to table TARUMIZU" offers a view of the Kinko Bay while you enjoy your meal. The menu includes set menus and rice bowls, but the Tarumizu specialty, kampachi and yellowtail, is a must-try. The photo shows the "Buri/kanpachi kama-age shirasu donburi" (yellowtail and kanpachi kama-age shirasu donburi). The yellowtail has a firm and elastic texture, and the kanpachi has a firm, fatty texture. The price is 1,200 yen (tax not included).
In addition, on the 10th of every month, "Tarumi Gokumi Special Kaisen Don" (1580 yen, photo) and "Yellowtail/Kanpachi Eating Comparison Don" (1000 yen) featuring yellowtail and kanpachi are available for 1100 yen and 500 yen respectively! This is also not to be missed. A small plate of sashimi is also served with set meals such as boiled fish, but if raw fish is not your thing, don't worry, there is also a shrimp tempura bowl and other dishes.
