The cold weather is about to get into full swing. In such a season, I really miss hot springs. Kyushu is, after all, a hot spring paradise. Onsen at roadside stations are convenient for taking a bath while resting or shopping. The prices are reasonable, too. Here is a list of 11 natural hot springs and 3 artificial hot springs at roadside stations in Kyushu! (*Bathing hours may be subject to change at some stations due to coronavirus control measures.)

Roadside Station Oto Sakura Kaido Sakura Kan

A garden open-air bath with beautiful greenery and medicinal stone baths that detoxify the body and refresh the mind.

　The open-air baths, planted in a garden style, are open and airy, and include one-person bathtubs made of porcelain and wooden tubs. The indoor baths also have large windows and a variety of bathtubs, including a bee skin with fine bubbles that cling to the body, a Jacuzzi, and a sauna. Men and women change in the large baths on a daily basis.
　Of particular note is the "Arashi no Yu," a medicinal stone bath in which the entire body takes in the minerals contained in 15 types of medicinal stones. The scene is like a fairyland, surrounded by tranquility and a mysterious atmosphere. The open-air bath is equipped with a sleeping bath, where visitors can lie down and enjoy the grandeur of the mountains and the sky while soaking in the hot water. Fireflies dance wildly in early summer, and the autumn leaves can be enjoyed in fall. There is also a sauna in the indoor bath. The men's and women's saunas are switched every week. The hot spring water is heated to maintain the proper temperature, and a wood-fired boiler that utilizes waste wood and thinned lumber is used to heat the water. This is an environmentally friendly system that can only be achieved in a place with a thriving forestry industry. (*The restaurant is currently closed.)

　Roadside Station Ariake" faces Shirogahama Beach, which is a busy beach in summer. There is a large bath on the second floor of the hot spring pavilion, complete with bubble bath, low-frequency bath, and sleeping bath. Beyond the large window is the azure sea, which boasts outstanding transparency. On the far shore, you can see Mt. Unzen Fugendake rising majestically. The baths are also famous as a sunset spot, so taking a bath at dusk is recommended.
　The restaurant offers a wide variety of menu items that make full use of fresh seafood landed locally and local brands such as Amakusa Ume Pork. The octopus tempura rice bowl, made with Amakusa's specialty octopus suet, is a popular dish with an irresistible crunchy texture.

Roadside Station Ono Onsen Ono-no-yu

　Nestled in the mountains, this hot spring resort has the atmosphere of the early Showa period. The hot water is alkaline simple spring water that clings to the skin. The sliding door connecting the open-air and indoor baths has a wooden frame instead of a sash, recreating a nostalgic space, and the bathtub in the indoor bath is made of hinoki cypress, spreading a fresh aroma. The open-air baths leading from the indoor baths are made of rocks, and the mountain greenery spreading out before your eyes and the clear air of the mountain village will put your mind at ease. The private baths are all unique, and include a cypress bath, a Goemon bath, and a rock bath.
　Along with the hot spring baths, the buffet restaurant is a must-see. The restaurant is designed in the image of a farmhouse from the early Showa period, and features an array of home-cooked dishes prepared by local housewives. There are 30 to 40 kinds of dishes, all of which are handmade with an emphasis on the taste of one's mother's cooking.

　Located on a separate site from the product pavilion, Gozenyu, as its name suggests, stands on the site of the Oka feudal lord's bathhouse. It has three sources with different temperatures, and the spring water is carbonic acid spring water. Although it does not produce noticeable bubbles, the effect of the carbonic acid in the hot spring water is outstanding. There is a large open-air bath that changes daily for men and women, and four private baths, each with a different structure.
　The covered half-open-air bathtub is circular in shape. A staircase leads down from the changing area to the bathrooms. Of the two Japanese-style indoor baths made of hinoki cypress, "Japanese Style 1" is equipped with handrails and is wheelchair accessible. The Western-style indoor bath has a European atmosphere with a retro feel. Both face the Serikawa River, so you can enjoy the hot spring baths with the murmuring of the river.

　Kiiri Hachiman Onsen Recreation Center" is the core facility of "Roadside Station Kiiri. The men's and women's baths, which are separate for men and women and have saunas, are simple, with only indoor baths, but the spacious bathtubs take advantage of the abundant hot spring water, and the water pours out in a continuous stream, giving the baths a pleasant slippery feel. No soap shampoo is available, so bring your own.
　Also of note here is the adjacent heated indoor swimming pool. There is a 25-meter pool that can be used by people of all ages for underwater walking, and a leisure pool equipped with a slide, a fountain, and a water slide for toddlers. 　The hot spring bathhouse at the roadside station boasts of its location. Sakurajima in front of the building, and the Kirishima mountain range can be seen from the other side of the building. The large baths are located on the first and second floors, with men and women changing on a daily basis. The view of Sakurajima from the open-air bath in the second-floor bathhouse is a powerful one. The ever-changing smoke plumes are so close to the beating heart of the earth that one forgets the passage of time. If you are lucky, you can even see a school of dolphins that appear whimsically in Kinko Bay. Incidentally, there is also a walking bath in the indoor bathhouse on the second floor.
　In addition, there is a 60-meter long footbath along the sea. It is a strong ally of drivers, who can sooth their tired feet from driving while enjoying the view of Sakurajima, and the fact that it is free of charge is most welcome.

　Roadside Station Kuninomatsubara-Osaki" underwent a major renovation and reopened in the spring of 2022. The facility was renamed "Hotel Centroland. The hot spring bathhouse "Shoin-no-yu" also reopened for business in November 2022 as Hotel Asuparu Onsen after a large-scale renovation. The hot spring water is a thick bicarbonate spring as before, and has a reputation as "beauty water" that leaves the skin smooth after bathing. In addition to the open-air baths, the indoor baths are rich in variety, with bubble baths, lying baths, and a hitting spa, and the popularity of the baths, which local customers visit daily, is understandable. The Japanese-style baths with open-air baths are completely different from the Western-style baths, and men and women are interchanged on a daily basis. The Japanese-style bathhouse with Mitsuakeishi hot spring and salt sauna is for men on odd-numbered days and for women on even-numbered days. In addition, in January 2022, a Finnish-style sauna called "Lowryu" will open in the Western-style baths, which are made of calcium stone artificial hot spring water. After the sauna, you can take a bath in the open-air baths. On the 26th of every month, 500 yen is reduced to 300 yen on "Furo no Hi" (bath day). There is only one family bath available, so reservations are recommended. There is also a special set ticket with the aquarium "Bansho Osakana-kan" on the premises.

　Yagoro no Yu" is a hot spring facility located in the Health Fureai Pavilion at the back of the park to the left of the product pavilion. The bathhouse is a simple structure with a cozy bathtub and sauna, but what is noteworthy is the hot water. When the water is poured into the bathtub, it passes through an ore called togol warmite, which changes the composition of the water to be similar to that of natural hot spring water, and is said to promote metabolism, moisturizing, and heat retention. In addition, the floor of the bathtub is covered with a super ion ceramic plate that generates negative ions. Experience the soft and moist feeling of the bath.
